Review: Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray (Oil Control), New Packaging But Same Ol’ Same Ol’

After not quite getting the hype on Urban Decay De Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray that I bought back in 2011, I was desperate to finish up the huge bottle. It took me a good six months to finish it. When news about Sephora bringing in the “new” Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray in travel size, I just got to have it. I went to Sephora but unfortunately I couldn’t find it. I only spotted this Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray (Oil Control) while on my way out of the store on another separate trip to Sephora.

Word of advice to self – read your own product review before splurging. Yeap. I should read my own review before jumping in Sephora like that lol.

Why say so? Well. I thought this is NEW. I thought this is different. It’s actually not :(. It seems like Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray undergo a new packaging from the old one that I bought back in 2011. This new white, minimal, clean bottle is designed by Lauren Beck. However I found out that “new” Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray comes in a few variant – Long Lasting, Oil Control and Cooling & Hydrating. I have oily skin. I bet you are getting bored of me saying that LOL but I still get tons of email asking me what’s my skin type o.O. Anyway I choose “Oil Control” of all three variant. My second option would be Long Lasting. Anyhow, Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray comes in two sizes – 120ml full size and 30ml travel size. I was mainly attracted to the travel size because of the price. I thought I could give this another try for a fraction of the price.

Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray travel size is cute. The bottle is in white matte body while the outer cap is in grey. I would prefer this cleaner-look packaging comparing with the previous one. It seems like Urban Decay had grown up :D. The weirdest thing is the bottle comes with two cap. There is another clear cap on the inside after removing the grey one. Maybe Urban Decay had taken an extra precaution for this travel size because it’s meant for traveling? 😀

This travel size bottle fits on my hand perfectly. The matte bottle surface prevent the bottle from slipping off my palm. The spray nozzle works fine. The recommended use is to:

(1) Apply makeup first.
(2) Hold the bottle 8 feet to 10 feet away and mist 2-4 times in an “X” and “T” formation.

As you can see this direction of usage has also changed. Previous one said to mist an “X” and “T” formation before and after makeup. I’m not sure which is better because the new direction seems a bit tacky for me. My face is already drenched in the setting spray when I mist once in an “X” and “T” formation. I couldn’t imagine what would it be like if I do mist 2-4 times. I can see some powder foundation melted even when I mist once. So I didn’t continue doing so for 2-4 times.

So, what do I think about this? Basically this is the same as previous version except for the new cleaner and simpler packaging. I still stand firm from my previous review. All the raves from oversea user on how good this is with oil control just doesn’t work for our Malaysia hot and humid weather. It doesn’t help with oil control, doesn’t help with preventing makeup meltdown, my face still looked shiny and makeup still slide off. Whatever Urban Decay claim this to do (refer picture on top)…it doesn’t do it for me. It certainly doesn’t matte my face as claimed too.

Sorry to say this but this is really a waste of money for oily skin. I think it will work better for combination skin. Dry skin user might need to consider other variant such as the Cooling and Hydrating one. But I still feel that this is NOT a necessity. I can live without this. Someone please remind me to stay away from Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray in the future when they repackage again LOL.
