Holiday At Japan Will Not Be Complete Without A Haul Of Their Must-Buy Tokyo Banana

Been feeling a little bit blue, a little bit down and a little bit unwell so I thought of telling you a treat that I got from my colleague who went to Japan for work cum holiday back in November 2013.

Who doesn’t know Tokyo Banana right? Tokyo Banana (東京ばな奈) basically are banana pudding flavoured custard sponge cakes wrapped and packaged in Japanese standards. The phenomena of this delicacies has quickly put it to be the number #1 souvenir of choice from family and friends who have recently visited Japan. This is the one thing I requested from my colleague to buy for me too 😀

Tokyo Banana 1
It comes in various design such as plain, tabby pattern, giraffe pattern, leopard pattern, plain with caramel banana custard and the new one is floral pattern with banana shake custard. Each design are available in various package such as 4 pieces per pack (¥500), 8 pieces (¥1,050) and 12 pieces (¥1,550). Plain Tokyo Banana is cheaper at 4 pieces per pack (¥470), 8 pieces (¥1,000) and 12 pieces (¥1,500). I kinda like leopard pattern but it gave me goosebumps so giraffe is the final choice 😀 . As a few of our colleague ordered it as well and it’s a bit troublesome to bring back, we gotten the 4 pieces pack.

Not only the packaging is super cute, the paper bag as well but I only get mine in a simple plastic individual packaging. But it’s okay. Even that too is cute. It’s not that I can eat the paper bag LOL.

Tokyo Banana 2
Here’s the famous Tokyo Banana! Before this I have been warned by friends that this cake is really nothing special. Deep down I know it’s really just the thought of chowing down a sponge cake flew in from Japan that brings up the hype.

Each package like this comes with an expiry date. I gotten this on the 2nd of December so it’s another 11 more days to go before it will gone bad.

Tokyo Banana 3
The ribbon graphic on the cake’s individual packaging is really too cute.

Tokyo Banana 4
The shape of the cake resemble a banana. No prize for guessing that one 😉 . One bite down and I feel meh. Besides the cake being all fluffy and soft, it taste like banana cake. Quite true on what other people said. It’s basically banana cake! lol. I like the banana pudding custard filling very much. It has a strong banana scent to it so if you are not a fan of banana cake, most probably you won’t like this as well. You can hand me yours 😛

Tokyo Banana 5
Let me end this with all the Tokyo Banana cake available at the moment 😀

Tokyo Banana 6
Hope this cutie cheer you up as it did to me 😀 . Now tell me, have you tried before? I know a lot of people have tried it. Gosh I’m so late in all this lol. Would you buy this as souvenir if you do go Japan for holiday?

  • Hahaha, a few months back, I also received this from a friend who went to Japan. It was the giraffe one too. Very cute, but yeah, the taste was just meh!

I wouldn’t buy it, I think there are some more traditional Japanese snacks and candy around, I also received some weird sweets, they were sort of green tea jelly like with beans inside, no clue what it’s called but I thought that was a more Japanese-y thing to get. 🙂

    • Leopard are hard to find. Giraffe is still easy to access according to my friend 😀

There’s a famous Japan biscuit or cookie something in a green wrapper with bamboo tree on the wrapper. I heard that is famous. I saw Isetan promoting it last month. I forgot to go check it out 🙁

I actually thought green tea Kit Kat was meh too. Still prefer the original Kit Kat. Unless Isetan bring in the strawberry one 😀

      • I also prefer original Kit Kat to the green tea one. I’ve tried the sakura one also, no clue WHAT the actual flavour is because can you really taste sakura? 😮 Also tried cheese cake flavour one, I rather liked it. 😀 It’s crazy how many difference flavours of Kit Kat Japan has!

        • Oh I thought it’s strawberry Kit Kat lol! I don’t think so you can really taste sakura though hehe. So weird. Isetan here should bring in more flavour!

  • Hi dear. Sorry for the eternal MIA. I have been very busy at work and depressed at home 🙁 But anyways, I always see photos of this Tokyo Banana whenever someone returns from Japan. No one has written about it as far as I know. You’re the FIRST! Thank you! I shall read this again when I have time this weekend. Meantime, you nom nom and feel happy ok. Take care and hugs!

    • No worries dear. CNY is nearing so work will be busy now and slows down later on, right before the festive. Japan is confusing to me so I can only write briefly about Tokyo Banana hehe. It is easy to get now in Japan comparing to last time where only certain places have it. Now it’s a bit wider.
I’m feeling depressed too. Sigh. Not sure why but just really in the blue.

      • Aww hugs! I hope you’re feeling better already. Indulge in some more Tokyo Bananas 🙂 Or spa. Anything that will cheer you up. I have read and seen so many photos of those beautiful and delicate Japanese dessert and cake! If I go to Japan, I think I will bring back their drugstore make up products and also assorted sweets and delicacies. Oh, and if I can find Kimono materials, that will be awesome too! Hehe. If we go some time during new Year, then there’s the Lucky Bag (Fuku bukuro) to snag. I think Japanese are a creative bunch of people, hence there will be a lot of cute souvenirs like key chains and a million times like Daiso 🙂

  • Japanese product always so good in packaging. It is so convenience to bring and eat. Will it be too sweet for the filling?

    • They are! In everything haha. The filling is not too sweet. Just nice. I wonder if the caramel one will be sweeter 🙂

  • I saw these everywhere when the hubby and I visited Japan last year. Believe it or not, I did not pick it up because I don’t have a sweet tooth and they have other more interesting desserts. Their packaging is very very cute but so is everything else in Japan 🙂
