Hada Labo Air Aqua UV SPF 50/PA+++ (Moist): No reason not to love a weightless, gel sunscreen this El Nino season

I go through different stages of favourite product on every month. Sunscreen is probably my favourite item at the moment. My guess is probably because our country Malaysia is experiencing El Nino at this very moment. Gift me flower and I’ll frown, gift me a bottle of sunscreen and I’ll smile for the whole week. Never like flower anyway 😛

When I received a bottle of Hada Labo Air Aqua UV SPF 50/PA+++ (Moist) from the mail a couple of weeks ago, I thought it was a day time skincare as the bottle was written “day emulsion”. I was all excited because I ran out of day time moisturizer at the same time lol. As I said earlier, I’m on the sunscreen craze at the moment. So I was equally happy with this new sunscreen from Hada Labo.

Hada Labo Air Aqua UV SPF 50/PA+++
Hada Labo Air Aqua UV SPF 50/PA+++ is a new sunscreen with new innovation of advanced 5 UV Defense System against UVA and UVB. Hada Labo claimed that this sunscreen texture is smooth and feathery light. Well let’s see about that later 🙂

This sunscreen reminds me a lot of a particular sunscreen that was discontinued quite some time ago. It comes in an all-white tube with the usual slim tip nozzle. The bottle is sleek and slim. I can easily control the amount that I want by squeezing the bottle body and stop when I had enough on my palm.

Hada Labo Air Aqua UV Nozzle
Not only the bottle reminds me of my old favourite sunscreen that was discontinued, shockingly the texture is so similar in so many way. I thought I found its long lost twin sister haha 😀 . Oddly, there was no ball bearing inside the bottle to evenly mix the content when I shake the bottle. Hada Labo Air Aqua UV texture is more to a semi-solid gel. It doesn’t budge, it sure is smooth but I was a bit reserved on the claim that its feather light since the sunscreen is quite solid. It doesn’t have any funky scent to it nor does it contain any fragrance. I would say the scent is quite neutral and typical for a sunscreen. Oh and did I mentioned that Hada Labo Air Aqua UV is pH balanced, free from any animal derivative ingredients, alcohol-free, colorant-free and mineral oil-free as well? 😀

Hada Labo Air Aqua UV is in white. I know some of you stay away from white sunscreen, fearing it will give you a white cast. I’m glad to report this one may be in white color but it finish off transparent. I’ve been using it for a good few weeks now and I don’t see any white cast after application and I don’t see any changes with my skin tone by mid day as well.

Here’s something that you need to take note. When buying Hada Labo Air Aqua UV from any pharmacies or hypermarkets, do take note that there is two variants – Moist; For Dry / Combination Skin and Fresh; For Oily / Combination Skin. The one I have with me here is Moist, which is meant to provide hydrating benefit to the skin as well. Choose the right one depending on your skin type and needs, alright? The Moist version contain Polyglycerin, which is an ultra moisturizing ingredient that has the ability to retain moisture on the skin for a longer lasting hydration. As you know, I have Oily / Combination skin so the Moist version is a teeny weeny oily on me if I use too much. Despite it’s semi-solid gel texture, without any doubt it is feather light on the skin. I have to be very careful with this one. Too much of it will send my skin haywire (I mean oily). It does feel a bit tacky on me, which I don’t prefer. I do use makeup base before foundation so technically it’s not a major problem for me. I think Fresh is more suitable for my skin type and need. I like a more matte finishing 🙂 . Fresh version on the other hand contain Sebonormine that helps to control sebum secretion and minimize large pores appearance.

Hada Labo Air Aqua UV Ingredients
Funnily I didn’t like this new sunscreen at all after using it for the first time. That is because I find it to be too oily for my liking. However its not so oily on me anymore on subsequent days. I found out that I was layering too much skin care before that so this Hada Labo Air Aqua UV feels oily and slippery on my face. I admit there are some days where I’m feeling extra generous with my skin care. I try not to do that anymore because it only makes my skin oilier on mid day. Now that I’ve pin point the root cause and solved the problem, I actually find this Hada Labo Air Aqua UV to be not bad after all. It doesn’t make my skin oily but instead it gives me a dewy complexion by mid day, which I like very much. My guess is the moisturizing ingredient in it helped to keep my skin properly hydrated thus lesser sebum secretion, which is very rare because my skin condition is so tricky that too much moisturizing could cause more sebum secretion and anything less will cause more sebum secretion as well. As long as it doesn’t make my skin any oilier, hey its definitely my favourite 😉

  • I just browse through http://www.yesstyle.com.au. They have this in stock. I like gel sunscreen for my dry skin. I’m still figuring out if I should pick this one up. It’s pricey here AU$33.90.

  • I have always love Hada Labo products. They are seriously kind to my super sensitive, dehydrated and clogged skin. Yea that’s a load of problems, I know. Anyhooo….thanx for this write up. Can you share with me how you use this product in your day routine? Like you mention that you use a make-up base before foundation. So when do you use this sunscreen?

    Thanx again.

    • Hi Inang, first you have to know the anatomy of skin care and makeup. Sunscreen is the last step of skin care BEFORE makeup. So makeup base (a makeup product) would fall after sunscreen, before putting on foundation. Regardless what, I always apply makeup base BEFORE foundation.

      Hope this helps 😉

        Thanx again. Yep that helps.
I use MAC Prep & Prime for a make up base. Its absolutely fantastic.

        • Haha my friend call me the pink panther lol. Does MAC Prep & Prime help to keep oil at bay? So far only Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector do that for me 🙂

          • Hmmm…. since I have dehydrated sensitive skin, oil secretion has never been a problem for me. So I won’t know if MAC’s P&P will help with that problem babe. But I do know Banilla & Co has some really good primer as well.

          • It’s okay. I’m in the midst of trying various makeup base as well. But then as far as I’ve heard, MAC products clog pores and some even had break out every time they use MAC. I personally never had it phew.

  • Hi dear. I have oily tzone. my nose mainly bt the rest of my skin is pretty ok n i suffer frm slightly large pores. Im using the moist for oily skin nw which i find is pretty gd. I dnt touch up makeup over thr day bt would u reco the fresh one instead to lessen sebum n help with my pores.

    • Hi Nadiah, this is a sunblock. It doesn’t do anything for pores. You will have to find a targeted product. I heard Fresh, which is meant for oily skin is better in controlling sebum. Hope this helps.
