Kiehl's Review: Skin Care Skin Care - Cleanser

Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash: A foaming gel cleanser for normal to oily skin type. Perfect for double cleansing as well

This is by far the toughest review I ever need to type out. No, not because the product is bad or whatsoever but my skin is in a state where everything is a-okay for me. That explains the delay in posting up the review by July. I told myself today that no matter what, I got to tell you about Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash.

Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash
True story – everytime I step into a Kiehl’s store, I tend to stand in front of Calendula Herbal Toner for a very long time, grabbing the bottle, tilting the bottle upside down numerous times, admiring the floating Marigold flower petals. Did you know that the Marigold flower petals are all hand-picked and placed into each and every bottle by hand? It’s just so pretty. The prettiest and unique toner I’ve ever seen. It is also because of the iconic Calendula Herbal Toner that Kiehl’s came out with Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, a gentle and paraben-free face wash for normal to oily skin type, which makes a great pair to the toner.

Kiehl’s believe that the first step to achieving healthy-looking skin begins with gentle yet effective cleansing that protects the skin barrier. So their chemists developed a formula  that utilize two gentle surfactants to actively remove surface dirt and oil, while ensuring the skin barrier is protected.

Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash Bottle
For a face wash, this 230ml bottle is really a huge bottle. As I said before in my Cleanser 101 post, a bottle of foaming face wash usually last for quite a long time as you only need a tiny bit of product to lather into foams, sufficient to cleanse the whole face and neck. Typically foaming face wash comes in a creamier formula and texture. Well, not this one. You will be surprised when I tell you that Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is actually in gel form. I know, I know. I said before that gel usually don’t lather that well comparing to foaming face wash. Now you get the best of both world – a gel foaming face wash that lathers well but doesn’t dry the skin.

The intelligent bottle comes with an On and Off cap. I do like the simplicity and the semi-clear bottle so that I can see how much I’ve used. To be honest, not much. I used it twice a day and yet I still have quite a full bottle. That’s what I like about Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash – cost saving.

Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash On Off Cap
Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is in a clear, runny gel texture. Just look at the runaway gel that I have below 😀 . One pump is all I need for the whole face and neck. I like that the pump doesn’t dispense out too much product per pump. The amount is just right.

Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash Dollop
In real, it does lathers into much more foam than what I had below. I love the scent very much. It’s somehow soothing and calming for me. The face wash is made from carefully selected amino acid-based surfactant to deeply cleanse the skin with it’s gentle and yet rich foam. It also contain vegetable-based surfactant to helps to further boosts the product’s ability to sweep dirt and oil away. This is something that every combination to oily skin type would like for their cleanser. I like to use this cleanser when I feel my face is oilier than usual and I don’t want to further add stress to it with a creamier foaming face wash. Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash does the trick for me. It’s the most ideal face wash for double cleansing so far. It helped to clean my skin thoroughly while keeping my skin hydrated. There is a slight moist and bouncy feel on the skin right after rinsing. However, I don’t see that the cleanser is able to make my skin less oily. It doesn’t do any of that nor have my skin gone less oilier. In fact I find it to be a moist cleanser.

Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash Foams
I review this based on my skin type, which is combination oily. Although majority of you find yourself in the same shoe as mine, I do understand that there are a handful of you that are with dry skin. So the question is, can dry skin type use this face wash? The answer is yes you can. Kiehl’s actually utilize Calendula Flower Extract for its soothing properties as well as Glycerin (my fav ingredient) to pull moisture from the air to help keeping the skin hydrated, soothe and nourished. This is not those drying type of cleanser albeit the foaming action.

Here are the ingredient list for Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash:

  • This is a great cleanser for me. Love the pretty toner too! I like the smell, texture and the fact this set doesn’t dry out my skin. Prefer it much more to the Ultra Facial Oil-Free cleanser by Kiehl’s.
Will definitely continue using this. Falling in love with Kiehl’s overall for skincare.
I’m hoping to try their Micro Blur product that you reviewed a few months ago too.

    • Probably because Ultra Facial Oil-Free cleanser is meant for oily combination skin so it’s more drying in a way. Calendula one is more moisturizing despite being a gel foaming wash. I definitely like the huge bottle. It’s more cost effective in a long run 😀 . I’m in love with Micro Blur. Running out soon. I would need to get a back up by then 😉
