Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet: It has everything you want for a matte lipstick

When it comes to lipstick or any forms of lipstick at all, my go-to has always been matte lipstick. Matte finish lipstick is my absolute weakness. However, having a dry and wrinkly lip makes any matte lipstick application and finishing a challenge. But I still love it. The trick is to have a well-moisturized lips. What about IF I am too lazy for all the prep work and just want to have a matte lipstick to work on my lips? I can name you several matte lipstick that I personally find good but there is one that is a game changer. Introducing Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet v2
When Bourjois opened its first kiosk in Sunway Pyramid back in June 2014, I made my round and was looking for Rouge Edition Velvet in particular. I was of course introduced to Bourjois Rouge Edition Lipstick (one of their top 3 product) and since I wasn’t into normal lipstick, I decided to wait for the matte version instead.

Rouge Edition Velvet is a liquid lipstick or lip lacquer that are with enhanced color and finishes to bold matte. The most similar other brand that I can think of is my most hated NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream. If you have similar lip condition as mine, save your money and go to Watsons or Bourjois kiosk and get this instead. All together there are eight shades to choose from – 01 Personne ne Rouge!, 02 Frambourjoise, 03 Hot Pepper, 04 Peach Club, 05 Olé Flamingo!, 06 Pink Pong, 07 Nude-ist and 08 Grand Cru. I have not one but three shades on hand that I’m going to review today 😀 . The shades I have are 02 Frambourjoise, 04 Peach Club and 07 Nude-ist.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Shades for Review
Rouge Edition Velvet comes in a small clear tube and bevelled doe-foot applicator for an easy, precise application. The shades you see from the outside of the tube is what you get. I like that the applicator wand is short so I can easily control my application. It is buttery smooth so it can get quite slippery during application 😀

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Packaging and Color
Now, this is one very interesting product. The color is amazingly pigmented. The texture of the liquid resembles a soft butter that is incredibly smooth and lightweight. I couldn’t even feel anything on my lips as I was pilling up the color and I like that. I love that I could build the intensity and opaqueness without feeling like I have an inch of product on my lips. What I notice about the doe-foot applicator is that each time I pull out the wand from the tube, I don’t get tons of product on it that I need to wipe off like how lip glosses is. I could just apply directly onto my lips and dip in for more when needed. Major love.

02 Frambourjoise
This shade is the reddest of the lot of three that I have. It is a red berry shade but with a hint of pink it in. So the tube looks like a dark fucshia but in real it’s a red that are toned down with some pink. It’s a red suitable for pink shade fans who wanted to try red but still want to instil the element of pink just to be safe. That sure do sounds like me LOL.

04 Peach Club
The name sorta says it all. It’s a dark peach tone, described as a pale orange tone. It’s a very dark peach color that are with a little bit of red in it in my opinion. One could easily mistaken it as a part of the red hue due to the intensity of it. This kinda peach suits most skin type. Cooler peach will suit fairer skin but this is like perfect for everyone. I’m not a fan of peach shade and this sure do looks good on me.

07 Nude-ist
Don’t let the name fool you. This is not a nude shade at all. Of all eight shades available, this is the lightest and an everyday wear shade. Bourjois said this is a rosewood shade but I think it’s more of a mauve shade.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Hand Swatch
Unlike some matte lipstick or lip lacquer, this Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet keeps my lips moisturized all day long. There wasn’t a bit dryness or crack at all. I tested it out by skipping lip balm the night before on purpose. I didn’t know what to expect and I was checking the mirror every hour to see if there is any crack on my lower lips. There was none AT ALL. After application, it turns to velvety matte. Throughout the whole time I had the product on, I was drinking water from the tumbler a lot but I still don’t feel any dryness on my lips. That is because the product is enriched with evanescent oils. It is incredibly comfortable on my lips that I forget I had lipstick on. The velvety layer disappear after some time from all the drinking but the stain stays on and on until I remove it. It doesn’t comes off completely with just a tissue paper so I usually use miceller water. The stain staying power is also out of this world. When I no longer feel the soft velvety layer on my lips, I can feel that the stain is a bit tacky. Not a lot. Just a tiny bit. But hey, the stain remains with absolute NO CRACK on my lower lips like how NYX SMLC gave me. You don’t get all that nonsense with Bourjois!

I must also tell you about the scent. I went to Watsons to test it out the next day after it was launched. I have heard that the scent is chemically strong. I agreed that the scent is strong but it wasn’t chemical. To me it smell plasticky. I wish Bourjois infused it with their signature fruity or rose scent in it though. The good news is, I can only smell the scent during application but once it’s on the lips, I no longer can smell anything. No even when I press my lips together. Here’s how all three shade looks like on my lips. 02 and 04 is very similar. Peach Club isn’t really peachy on my lips lol. Nude-ist on the other hand is my favourite of all. It’s a mauve but sometimes it looks like a fucshia pink on me. Like I said, this product is very interesting. What you see on the tube may differ a bit when applied on the lips 😀

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet On The Lips
I was extremely impressed with Frambourjoise and Peach Club so I decided to hunt for Nude-ist. Nude-ist is flying off the shelve ever since it was made available. I went to Watsons KLCC with the intention to bag it home but it was out of stock. I heard most Watsons are out of stock for this particular shade. I know Watsons Kajang will still have the stock somehow so I planned to make a trip to the town to pick it up. Before that, I went shopping at the new mall – IOI City Mall, passed by Watsons and saw Bourjois. I was so happy to find that all Rouge Edition Velvet is fully stocked up and I paid RM38.60 for 07 Nude-ist.

Are you a fan of matte lipstick? If you are, you must must mustttttt try Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet. It is by far the best matte lip lacquer that I’ve tried so far. Forget about NYX’s SMLC. This is a game changer.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet is available at Sunway Pyramid kiosk or Watsons store.

Price: RM42.90 for 7.7ml. Currently Watsons is selling for RM38.60.

  • SMLC didn’t give me the problem like you had. I had bought 2 Rouge Edition Velvet from Watsons after seeing the promotion. Bourjois is more moisturising than SMLC^^ The tint is so long wearing! There is no fading like normal lipstick. I don’t like the smell at all =(
    I’m glad you found a better SMLC^^

    • Lucky you! As far as I know, not everyone will encounter the same problem as I did. Now that you’ve tried the Bourjois now, isn’t it better than SMLC? 🙂

  • Very smitten by the colours! Looks good on you. Nude looks amazing though it does not look like nude at all haha. Have fun 🙂

    • Exactly. Nude is not nude at all. Bourjois said this is more of a rosewood color but I say it’s more of a mauve, but on certain angle it looks like fuchsia lol

    • If you only use one lipstick, it will finish but when it’s a lot, it doesn’t finish LOL. I have the same problem now. I’m on the lipstick craze now OMG. Maybelline have a new matte lipstick, not sure if Malaysia will bring it in or not. Looks promising. But at the moment I’m so happy with Bourjois 😀
