NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray: Yay or nay?

I have never been lucky with makeup setting spray (read here and here), what more a matte finish long lasting setting spray. It is quite hard to find NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray at Sephora as it is always sold out. You know what people say, when it’s hard to find, you would want it badly. When I finally managed to track it down, I bought it in a split second. I figure what have I got to lose since it is cheaper and it was the Sephora Black Card member private sale.

NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray
There are two variant of makeup setting spray within NYX. One is this Matte Finish (or Matte Shine-Free Finish according to NYX website) while the other one is Dewy Finish (or Dewy Glow Finish). I can be quite an oil slick by mid day so Dewy Finish is a definite no-no for me. I remember Shaaanxo from YouTube mention before that she love this stuff. If Shaaanxo likes it, I would too. Boo! Wrong thinking 😛

Anyway, as I said earlier I don’t have much luck with makeup setting spray except for MAKE UP FOR EVER Mist & Fix. Mist & Fix makes my makeup look so flawless but it is not a product that control sebum. I needed something that can control excess sebum so that my foundation stays on without slipping. NYX said that their Makeup Setting Sprays are lightweight and comfortable to be worn on the face while making sure makeup stays put, fresh and long lasting. It comes in a sleek all black bottle and it is rather a small bottle in my opinion.

I really didn’t except the pump to work well but it did. Some spray pump can be faulty at times and the mist can be huge and ‘rough’ so-called. NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray is the opposite of all that. The pump system is still superb after using it for a good few months and the mist is one of the finest I’ve used so far. It is on par with MAKE UP FOR EVE Mist & Fix. What I really hate about this product is that it melt my makeup after misting, just like the Urban Decay De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray and then there is this scent. It has a chemical scent to it and it’s just awful. I have to hold my breath everytime I use it. Bear in mind everyone has a different perception on scent description so some might say this doesn’t have a scent or some might say it is not bad. The scent is just not for me.

As far as the product name or claim goes, nope. It doesn’t work a bit at all for me. Not only my makeup doesn’t last long, my makeup slips especially on the lower part of my face and the matte claim is totally rubbish. What matte? I don’t see any matte finish nor does it help my face to stay matte. It’s like I didn’t use anything at all. Might as well I stop using since there’s no different anyway.

NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray Mist
Can you see the super fine mist?

In conclusion, this is just one of those makeup setting spray that doesn’t work for me. Not many in the market does anyway. I was intrigued with the Matte Finish claim at first and I’m really disappointed that it doesn’t work at all. I’m not fond of the scent and the small amount of product. What I like is the fine mist.

I saw from Sephora KLCC last Saturday that Urban Decay had came out with a new prep spray that claim to absorb oil, minimizes pores and reduces redness. Oh boy. That’s a huge claim for a prep spray. It is retailing for RM50 but I’m too afraid to spend on something that doesn’t work again.

Have you tried any of NYX makeup setting spray? Does it work much better on you? I hope it did!

  • TBH I don’t find makeup setting spray necessary for everyone. I could be wrong as I have dry skin. Combi/oily skin could have different needs. It’s a good thing that you realised this spray doesn’t work for you and it’s not too expensive ^^

    • It is not. Not everyone encounter melting makeup dear. Usually it’s oily skin that will need their makeup to last longer as makeup tend to slip when the face starts to oil up. I’m just going to stick to my MUFE hehe

  • Luckily I always can read your review before I blindly go and purchase it. I wonder why a lot of product that claims can control oil can never really control it.

    • I also read review and everyone said good LOL. I believe NOTHING can control oil. Seriously. Too dry, become oily face. Too moisturize, get oily face. So tough to be a girl haha
