Make Up - Lips Review: Make Up Smashbox

Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner: A recent discovery that I wish I’d known earlier

Although I don’t have a clear, even lip line especially on the bottom lip, I’m not used to applying lip liner before lip stick. Generally are you’re aware, I have dry, chapped, wrinkly lips, and lip liner will dry or accentuate the lip wrinkles even more. It is only last year I started to wear lip liner when I’m feeling the tiny bit fancy for the day but I wear it in a different way, which I will share with you soon. 2015 is the year that totally change me when it comes to liner liner, thanks to Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner. I was so thrilled that Smashbox include two of their Always Sharp Lip Liner for me to review and the shades that I got are Fuchsia, my favourite shade of all and Nude Light, the PERFECT nude shade.

Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner
The name Always Sharp Lip Liner is self-explanatory. At first I wasn’t aware that the name actually do mean what it mean. I thought it’s just a product name without thinking deep. You know me. I’m always blur lol. Smashbox created this awesome lip liner that self-sharpens every time you twist the cap off. HOW AWESOME IS THAT? The idea came from Marilyn. Audrey. Angelina, icons who prove that one of our core beauty beliefs that a lip can make a legend. Inspired by these perfect pouts. So Smashbox created this product that not only to Self-Sharpening but also a product to Glide-On Shaping and Color-Match Sculpting legendary lips.

Overall there is 16 shades available based on Smashbox website and I’m not sure if our local Sephora carries all 16 shades or just certain shades. Interestingly, there are four types of nude shade within the 16 shades. The one I have is Nude Light, which happens to be my favourite among the two despite my love for Fuchsia. Don’t get me wrong. I still love Fuchsia. Nude light is described as a ‘beige pink’ shade. I’m always leaning towards pink base nude because I think it suits my skin tone more. On me it’s the perfect nude. I can apply on it’s own or over a clear gloss or lip balm. Fuchsia on the other hand is described as a ‘vibrant magenta’ shade. The shade is definitely not as dark as what’s on Smashbox website. It is a bright fuchsia shade, pretty much true to it’s name. Sometimes I wore this under Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer and sometimes on it’s own.

Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner Fuchsia and Nude Light
One of the three main feature of Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner is Self-Sharpening. I would say this is the main and not forgetting unique feature. I’ve never seen anything like it before. This feature is the same as their award-winning Always Sharp Eye Liner. Each of the lip liners have a tiny built-in sharpener in the tip of the cap, so they self-sharpen every time I twist off the cap. The sharpener is not visible as it’s built deep inside the inner cap. I still can’t believe how cool and convenient is that.

Sharpening it is not rocket science but for first timer, there tend to be a little fumbling here and there. All I do is to follow the direction of the arrow. To make it easier for you to understand, I’ve made a simple video on how to sharpen the lip liner.

Here is how both Always Sharp Lip Liner looks like on my lips.

I wore Fuchsia on it’s own but I struggled with the application. My wrinkly lips is the main contributor to the issue that I had. I notice that the lip liner will become patchy if I keep layering on the product and that makes my lips even drier. It’s quite normal as I had the same exact issue with MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Liner.

Nude Light on the other hand was applied over a thin layer of lip balm. I wanted to see how it fares on a slippery, oily product and I must say I am really surprised that the lip liner is still able to glides on and stick on the lip surface. The balm definitely helped the application so much easier and smoother. There is no signs of patchiness even if I layer the product on. The balm also keep my pathetic dry lips moisturized and it makes the overall look so much nicer than without.

It’s comfortable enough to be applied on it’s own but it does settle into fine lines and makes the lips dry. And yet it’s still comfortable. However it’s a whole different story when I had lip lacquer on top. Always Sharp Lip Liner keep my lipstick long lasting through countless cup sipping and bites (not vampy bites ya). I can’t tell you how it fares for a full day because I have a habit of removing all my lipstick either before meal or after meal. It survived through a meal and that’s good enough for me. I love it so much that I’ve always gone through the whole Fuchsia and I’m now living on Nude Light 😀 . To be honest the 0.27g content is just too little. I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I no longer could twist anything out from the pen 🙂

I’m sure you’ve seen me wearing Smashbox Always Sharp Lip Liner in Fuchsia recently and a few of you reached out to me saying you like the color I had on my lips. Now you know the secret 😛

For me, the whole self-sharpening feature makes me 80% less lazy in using lip liner because I absolutely hate sharpening ordinary pencil lip liner as the lead sticks on the sharpener like nobody’s business. Lip liner also known to be longer lasting on the lips due to it’s matte formula, which explains why I like to cheat and use it on it’s own. Just ask Kylie Jenner. She only use lip liner and nothing else for that famous huge, pouty lips! My next wish list purchase is Always Sharp Eye Liner for sure 😉

    • I’m guilty at this too. But the display at IOI City Mall is easily spotted, right next to Too Faced if I’m not mistaken. So I stopped by more at IOI City Mall. Can’t missed it since it’s on the way to the cashier haha.

Yeap! I finished Fuchsia. So sad. I’m still twisting until today hoping I can still get it up lol

  • Handy that it has a built-in sharpener. Nice colours too! Other than their famous primer, I don’t know that much about this brand.

    • Before this I was too. I only heard about the primer especially the lid primer. I’m very interested with Full Exposure Palette. We are getting the Double Exposure here soon.

  • Have you found a cheaper dupe for Nude Light? This is my absolute favorite liner but I want to find a less expensive version for everyday wear because I find that there isn’t enough product to last me beyond 3 weeks! Thanks in advance 🙂

    • Hi Isabel, I found even better and cheaper lip liner and that is the Essence Longlasting Lipliner. I didn’t found a dupe for Smashbox Nude Light with Essence but I settle with more mauve-y shade 😀
