Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara: The kind of mascara that gets better over time

Tell me. Can you leave the house without mascara on? I know most people feel naked without eyeliner. To be frank, I can live without eyeliner. I just can’t skip eyebrow and mascara. Ever since I discovered mascara and the difference it makes with and without, I make sure I apply at least a quick coat even when I had brittle lashes at one point of time.

It takes some time to know if a mascara is good. Some mascara tend to wow at first application but sucks later on and some mascara doesn’t perform well at the beginning especially when it’s new but gets better as the content dries up a little. This is what happen with me and Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara.

Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara
Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara is actually a waterproof version of the brand’s best-selling mascara – the Full Exposure Mascara. I’ve not used the non-waterproof version before as I only use waterproof mascara so I can’t really tell you what’s the different. This waterproof version however is inspired by on-set technique of layering lengthening fiber mascara over a volumizing formula. It is said to exposes longest, fullest lashes, with no clumps and no flakes.

When it comes to mascara, the first thing I see is the brush. I’m all about small and slim brush so if I do spot a big ol’ brush, I’ll scream my lungs out. I have short and sparse lashes so huge brush applicator really freaks me out. The Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara brush is neither big or small. It’s long in length and the brush is in a triangle shape from small tip to medium size base. I did not scream this time 😀 . There is also no stinky smell, just a fair hint of typical mascara smell. I’m liking what I see at this point.

So. Smashbox is brave enough to list down 10 benefits fun fact of the mascara on the website. That’s a lot to claim for a mascara.

  • Stays put for up to 10 hours
  • 107% increase in curl
  • 96% increase in volume
  • Sweat- and humidity-resistant
  • Safe for contact lenses/ophthalmologist-tested

For me, this is one of those mascara that gets better over time i.e. when the mascara dries up a little bit. I don’t like it when I used it for the first few times. The mascara somehow doesn’t stick onto my lashes, not even layering coats and coats of mascara. I then let the mascara unattended for a few days and continue using it thereafter. It gets better as the mascara dries up and adhere more onto the brush. I was able to coat my lashes on first application and build the length and volume I want. However I face with another issue. It clumps on my lashes. It’s not a big issue as a brush of lash comb will remove any clumps.

I have a totally different set of lashes on both eyes. My left lashes are fuller, longer and easy to curl while my right lashes is the rebellious daughter with short, facing downward, sparse and hard to curl. To be fair, I’ve decided to use my pathetic right eye for the Before and After photo. It’s a risk but hey, I like to take on a challenge lol.

I wanted to build up to three coats but I don’t usually go all the way to three coats. Two coats will do this time. It get clumpy by the time I apply the second coat. The trick in layering is to wait for the first coat to completely dry before applying the second coat. I don’t recommend combing the lashes with a lash comb when it’s completely dry because there will be flakes of mascara falling from the lashes.

Since I have totally different length lashes for both eyes, the end of my left lashes tend to smudge my under eye from all the blinking and no smudges on my right under eye. I find that if I dust some powder on my under eye, the smudging never happen.

Removing on the other hand is not too difficult My daily must-have eye makeup remover is a bi-phase remover and that removes everything completely. Having said that, I still end up with a bit of black residue on the tear duct after shower. It could be that the eye makeup remover gets into my eye or something.

The Smashbox Full Exposure Waterproof Mascara for me may not be the best I’ve used but it’s quite good for what it claims to be. It doesn’t weight my lashes down, adds volume, length easy to remove, doesn’t cause any breakage or whatsoever. It does stays on the whole day until I remove it, which is roughly around 13 hours of wear. It doesn’t flake during the day and so far I’ve not experience any eye irritation. I do have sensitive eyes and they can easily become watery. This mascara doesn’t make my eyes watery and that to me is the biggest plus point 😀

  • You still suffer from broken lashes? What is the reason behind it? Anyway, love this review from you especially the shot from bottom up 😀

    • Yeap! It happened when I tried new eye makeup remover. Mascara don’t really break my lashes. Most of the time is the remover.
Oh! That freaky bottom up photo LOL 😀

  • I agree about removing mascara being more damaging to lashes and that’s why I’m divided about wearing mascara especially the waterproof variety. I dread the removal of it so much. I also find that if I wear too much eye makeup, the removal process results in a really sensitive eye area so I really leave my area rather naked but for a simple slick of eyeliner. Mascara is for days when I need to ‘pop’ and those are rare lol

Dare I say, I suspect the eye makeup removing process could be the number one cause of ageing around the eye for me so I am really careful about the cleansing process here.

Smashbox seems to be a somewhat underrated brand in this country. I haven’t had a chance to use anything from this brand but I’d be more interested in their primer but I do see the improvement to your lash length and volume in the before and after shots.

    • You are right. I remember my eyes not being as sensitive as it is now. But what to do. Bought too many eyeshadow palettes so have to finish it lol. I do find expensive eye makeup remover to be better in so many ways. I should probably shift back to splurging on expensive eye makeup remover.

That’s what I always said too! Too underrated. I must try more of Smashbox. The next in my list is eyeshadow palette and their other primer. Kinda eyeing on the Always Sharp Eyeliner too 🙂 . Oh gosh. My ‘before’ lashes is literally no lashes at all lololol

      • Speaking of short lashes, I signed on for a trial with Realsh and have been using their serum for about three months and I have to say, my lashes really did grow longer and thicker!
No one was more surprised than me because I’ve always been skeptical about this sort of thing but now that I’ve actually stuck to daily application for 3 months, I’m really, really happy with the state of my lashes. It’s quite a miracle for me.
The only issue is that it’s quite expensive at Rm199 + Rm20 delivery and a really small tube at 3ml but it actually has lasted me more than 3 months and is still going; even after daily application.
The good thing is that after 3 months I no longer have to apply it daily but only once or twice a week so the next tube should last me even longer.
I’m sorry I sound like an ad here but you should know me by now, if something doesn’t work – I won’t say it does. I’ve never tried Talika so I don’t know how it compares.

        • Actually I thought of Realash a few weeks ago because I keep on remembering your review. The before and after is amazing. Yikes! The price is expensive but it’s more or less same as every other brands around. Time to collect more angpow money 😀 😀 😀

  • I don’t wear mascara too^^ My eyelashes are really short. The brush keep touching my lid. I got fed up and stop using mascara. Do you have any solution in preventing mascara from touching the lid during application? 🙁

    • You too? Wow. Recently I found out that not many people like to wear mascara due to the removal. I don’t mind the removal because I can’t leave the house without mascara haha. It’s easy to prevent mascara from touching your eyelid during application my dear. Just use a mascara guard! 😀
