Peter Thomas Roth Review: Skin Care Sephora Skin Care - Masks

Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic Sephora Exclusive: A beginner set for curious cats

I love the holiday collection at Sephora. This year I went all out. You know, to make up for last year? 😀 This is also the year where most people throw me the same question – “Sephora again?”. Yes I did Sephora again.

Among all the limited and exclusive holiday collection, Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic Sephora Exclusive is the one and only skin care set that I really wanted to bag home. I didn’t because it was retailing at RM208. The thought of buying three little 50ml pot of gel mask at 200 bucks is not justifiable for me. I always take a peek at the price during Sephora holiday collection markdown everytime I’m at Sephora but the price remains at RM208. That was until a month later where I casually stroll pass this set, reverse and took a double glance at the price because it was reduced to RM145! Initially I wanted to get Marc Jacobs eyeshadow palette and I couldn’t decided which to buy so I went home with Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic Sephora Exclusive instead 🙂

Peter Thomas Roth gel masks has been in my wishlist ever since I read about them from Paris B. Everytime I read about a product review from Paris B, she makes me wanting to sneak out from work to buy it. All.the.time. Without fail lol.

Peter Thomas Roth in Malaysia is not only located at Sephora stores but they have retail counters at Robinsons The Gardens, Metrojaya Mid Valley, Metrojaya The Curve and Metrojaya Kuching City One. To be honest, I have no idea they have counters elsewhere before glancing through their store location page from the website. This Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic set is Sephora Exclusive, which means you can only find this set at Sephora. The set contain three 50ml mask, two of it are gel mask – Cucumber Gel Mask and Rose Stem Cell, while another one an exfoliating treatment mask – Pumpkin Enzyme Mask.

Cucumber Gel Mask

I happen to dislike the color green and cucumber so naturally I wasn’t attracted to the Cucumber Gel Mask among the lot. I was expecting a nose clogging cucumber scented gel mask but turns out this has the lightest scent of all. It actually smells quite good and I love it. The Cucumber Gel Mask is a moisturizing and calming gel that helps soothe dry or irritated skin. It has a tad bit of cooling sensation even if the product is not refrigerated. Despite being an extreme detoxifying hydrator mask, I find that this doesn’t do much for my skin. It feels ‘normal’ like every other gel mask I’ve tried before. I like to go very generous with this. I’ve tried applying a thinner layer and it itch my skin when the mask starts to dry a bit. So go generous! This mask can also be used as a sleeping mask for those who need an intensive hydration treatment boost. Personally I don’t use it as sleeping mask because my skin will have breakout if I over-moisturized my skin.

Rose Stem Cell

I love anything that has rose scent in it. Compared to Cucumber Gel Mask, the rose scent is stronger but not as strong as I want it to be. However it feels so much better on the skin and does more too in my opinion. The Rose Stem Cell mask is more of an anti-aging gel mask that counteract visible signs of aging for younger-looking skin. Besides feeling nice on the skin, smelling nice and having a smooth bouncy skin after rinsing, I can’t really see a huge difference with my skin. Probably because this is targeting visible signs of aging, which I don’t have except for the fine lines on my under eye. This I have to give credit to my oily combi skin. As you already know, I do implement anti-aging regimen into my daily skin care routine as a part of prevention step. If it says it’s a bio-repair gel mask, let’s hope it really does repair from beneath the skin! 😀

Pumpkin Enzyme Mask

This one I believe is quite new in the series. I’m not a fan of pumpkin as well but I do like the grainy texture. I must say this Pumpkin Enzyme Mask and Rose Stem Cell is the reason why I bought the set. This mask smells exactly like pumpkin. Everytime I used it I feel like I’m slapping on some baking batter onto my skin. Both of the gel mask is to be apply generously but not for this. Only a thin layer is recommended. I also find this mask to be the most tedious of all. After applying a thin layer, I would need to wet my fingertips and massage the mask in circular motion before leaving it on for 3-7 minutes. I usually apply all my mask in the room so this means I would need to go back to the bathroom and do the massaging steps. This mask gave me the look of severe skin allergy due to the color. And let me warn you it stings so badly! Usually I remove it in 5 minutes or so because I couldn’t stand the burning sensation on my face. The stinging is very similar to GlamGlow ThirstyMud, except that this Pumpkin Enzyme Mask is drier than GlamGlow. Rinsing with cool water helps and I need to apply moisturizer thereafter as it makes my skin dry and tight. This mask also contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid aka AHA that increases the skin sensitivity towards the sun. It is recommended to use sunscreen for the next following week to prevent sunburn. Sounds serious, eh? If you are an avid sunscreen user there is nothing to be afraid of. Besides the stinging, I quite like this one. I don’t use this 1-2 times a week as recommended as my skin is so dry thereafter so I’m only using it once every two weeks.

Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic Sephora Exclusive is the set to get if you’ve always been wondering about their mask series and you don’t want to splurge RM188 – RM193 for a full size tub. A set like this is always good because you get to try three different mask instead of just one. I’ve always been a gel/cream mask type of girl so this is the perfect set for me. Having said that, I don’t find two of the gel mask to work at it’s best for the price. Kamsiah told me it feels normal, which I totally agree with her. It does feel normal. However do take my review with a pinch of salt because I have combi-oily skin. I feel that those with normal to dry skin will see or benefit more from the gel mask. But, if you have dry skin, do becareful with the Pumpkin Enzyme Mask. It is slightly dry, stings (on me) and the skin will feels even drier and tighter thereafter. It is best to get a sample first before purchasing 🙂

Peter Thomas Roth Skinstant Mask Magic Sephora Exclusive is available exclusively at Sephora stores only.

Price: RM208, currently there’s a markdown price of RM145.

  • I had a chance to try a bar of soap by this brand and it was amazing.
I wasn’t overly excited to try it because I’m not really a bar soap person but on a holiday recently, I didn’t want to bring too much skincare and decided a bar of soap would have to do the entire facial cleansing job and since it said it was a facial soap on the packaging I decided to bring it along.
Let me tell you, this was the best bar of soap ever – it cleaned without drying and was so kind on my skin. I’ve been looking for a replacement ever since.
I could not find this soap at Sephora stores here and I had won this in a giveaway so I may have to order it from overseas.
Anyway, back to the topic – this mask set. I think it’s a good trial kit but I’m not liking the sound of a stinging mask – even if it smells like pumpkin pie!

    • At first I thought what bar soap lol. Now that I read it properly, I get it haha. Maybe try looking for the bar soap at their retail counters 🙂
I don’t know why some mask stings my face. It could be only but come to think of it, I don’t even have dry skin. It doesn’t make sense that it stings on me. Like GlamGlow ThirstyMud, no one said it stings their face. You will end up looking like oompa loompa with the Pumpkin mask. And yes, it does smells like pumpkin pie lol 😛 . The smells is not bad especially for pumpkin lover. It’s too foody for me.

  • I bought a full size Cucumber gel mask from Sephora before this set was out otherwise I’d love to get this set instead. Pumpkin mask sounds painful. I’m not sure what to feel about it. I’m intrigued to see it myself at Sephora this weekend.

    • Quickly finish that tub and buy this set hehe 😀 . I’m not a fan of pumpkin. The mask is not that bad considering it stings my face. Do try it out at Sephora. However do remember a hand swatch is different from the face ya.

  • Aww thank you for saying that I help empty your wallet haha 😉 This was the set I had my eye on when I had a preview but then I sort of “forgot” to go to Sephora when the Xmas deals and then post-xmas sales were on! Was most interested in the pumpkin mask because it smelled quite nice. Good to know you had a chance to trial this set 😀

    • Don’t you just love anything that comes in a set? The full size tub are soooo expensive, especially the Pumpkin Enzyme Mask. Phew! So this set is really good to try a few different mask 😀

      • Haha sets are the best, like you rightfully say, for the curious cats 🙂 Sometimes sets are value for money in terms of $/ml. I bought the Andalou Naturals Pumpkin Honey Glycolic mask from iHerb just because of the Pumpkin Honey and brightening promise 🙂 Have yet to use it yet.
