What is Eczema?

Eczema is caused by interplay between genetic and environmental triggers. Eczema often affects people who either suffer from asthma and/ or hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or have family members who do aka genetic. These three diseases are often referred by doctors as the ‘atopic triad’. It is characterised by these two easily identified symptoms: rashes and extreme itching. Skin becomes extremely dry and it begins to itch. That is when the urge to scratch become intolerable and painful. The more you scratch, the more the skin breaks and becomes a target for infection. This triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals and your skin becomes inflamed, which further irritates the skin. This results in a vicious itch-scratch-infection-inflammation cycle.

Eczema is a multi-factorial condition, which can be triggered by things in the environment or certain habits that can make the itching and rashes worse. So that is why it is very important to educate young patients and their parents/ caregivers on the proper management and care of eczema such as constant hydrate the skin with the use of moisturisers and controller creams and the use of rescue medicines as prescribed by doctors correctly. The itch usually comes before the rash does and the rashes comes and goes. When this happen it will affect the patients’ daily activities and sleep at night, especially for young patients as it causes distress to the parents. In the MyEAP guidebook, Dr Leong commented that he always tell his young patients that having eczema is like running a long-distance marathon. You may not find a medication that works immediately but you will never give up and continue to run the race.

Keeping Eczema Under Control

ATOPICLAIR Product Range
Atopiclair, the first medical device cream of its kind launched in 2011, is a brand and eczema-control product range well-accepted in Malaysia. This non-steroidal treatment and controller cream, which is USFDA-approved, does not have added colouring, fragrance, paraben and animal derivatives. It is also ‘Muslim-friendly’ because it does not contain any porcine (khinzir) derivatives or ingredients. The product has been clinically tested to be effective and well-tolerated among infants, children and adults who are suffering from mild to moderate eczema.

Atopiclair is highly effective in providing fast itch relief and good eczema control. Studies have shown that 9-out-of-10 infants, children and adults, who were treated with Atopiclair, subsequently had no need for steroid rescue medication within the study period. This is good news for young patients and the elderly as their skins are thinner. Another unique feature of Atopiclair is its ability to support healthy skin barrier function by preventing water loss from the skin surface for up to 72 hours. It effectively repairs the dry and broken barrier function in eczema skin. Atopiclair is formulated with powerful antioxidants that work synergistically to enhance the natural skin barrier. Therefore, regular application of Atopiclair helps prevent affected skin area from future flare-ups.

  • Oh! Just what I need!
    Thanks for this blog, Fiona!
My girl was confirmed having eczema and was on Hydrocortisone cream.
It improved tremendously, bcz the cream contained 0.5-1% steroid.
But I am looking for something for her that doesn’t contain steroids.

    • I have eczema too but patches on random places. Two on my face. No cream able to cure it but a cream that was prescribed to me by a pharmacy. It contain steroid and I didn’t even know. Another pharmacy was shocked that I applied it on the patches on my face. Thank goodness I applied just a very thin layer and I only need to apply once or twice a week.

      • Gosh! They should have informed you!
Steroids will cause skin to become thinner, and that’s the reason I didn’t apply on her face and only use a very thin layer on the affected parts on her limbs.
I’m slowly reducing the usage to once a day now and also googling as much info as I could during my break time, to see / read up on the condition.

        • After going through countless tube only they told me LOL. And that was from other pharmacy in Bangsar. Freak me out. Now I’m going to use this Atopiclair instead since mine is an on and off thing and it’s not that serious unless I scratch it.

    • Oops! Too excited…
here’s my reason for wanting to try this cream:

I would like to try this cream because I am concerned about long-term usage of steroids, no matter how low its content is and its side effects on my little 15-month old toddler girl.
Even though hydrocortisone helped improve her condition, I am told that eczema will flare up once in a while whenever something triggers it, especially in our hot and humid weather.
Having read that Atopiclair is steroid-free, I am even more eager to try it as her face has started to feel coarse and I am worried it will flare up on her face too, and prevention is certainly much, much, much better than cure.

  • Hi Fiona. Not entering the competition but just wanted to mentioned that according to one of the mummies in my breastfeeding FB group, her son’s eczema which is hereditary got better and is now under control due to her taking good probiotics since she was pregnant and also feeding her son probiotics since birth. I was just checking out probiotics yesterday from Vitacare and I was told that the probiotics from BioGaia can be given to infants. Of course probiotics is not only to cure eczema but also to build immunity and control stomach issues like colic and diarrhea in children. Just wanted to share 🙂

    • Hi Victoria, thanks for sharing 🙂 . I agree that building immunity from the inside is important. Topical treatment is to relieve the attack on the skin surface. I will remember this when I’m pregnant in the future 😉
      Thanks again dear 😀

          • Your welcome ladies. Good to help other mummies this way :-). I just bought Bio-Life probiotics for myself. Vitacare having offer until 14 June where you can buy 1 bottle of 120 capsules and they are giving another 30 capsules for free. So you get 150 capsules for RM143.00. You are recommended to take 2 capsules every morning on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before your breakfast. Since this type of probiotics has live cultures, you need to store the bottle in the refrigerator.

  • Oh, I have products by this brand. My eczema is always weather related. Changes in sun/ wind/ rain make it worse.
I have a couple of products by this brand as recommended by Josie at Skinfrostings. They are okay but don’t work as quickly as steroidal creams but I know that steroidal creams are a whole other massive problem when used in the long term and I am trying to get myself off them. Gosh, it’s just like drugs!

    • I agreed. They are okay but doesn’t work as fast as steroidal cream. I’ve tried it yesterday after an episode of itchiness, peeling and redness. The itchiness went away within minutes but redness is still there. Peeling on the other hand was reduced tremendously. I’m applying a few times a day today 🙂
