ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip and Ultra Satin Lip: Is It Worth The Hype?

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip and Ultra Satin Lip
When it comes to lipstick, I am an absolute fan of matte lipstick. I am not into lip glosses, shiny lipstick, creamy lipstick that sorta thing. I want matte and nothing but matte. Liquid lipstick releases here has been a hit and miss. Somehow the formula does not seems to be right – too sheer, does not dries down completely matte, too liquidy and so on.

ColourPop came, making a huge fuss in the beauty scene due to the affordable USD$6 price tag. They first released Lippie Stix in five formula – Sheer, Satin, Matte, Créme and Glossy. Out of the five, I have collected one each for Satin, Matte and Créme, which I will talk about soon 🙂 . Then came Ultra Matte Lip with mixed review. And the recent release would be the Ultra Satin Lip.

The packaging for Ultra Matte Lip and Ultra Satin Lip are basically the same, except for the wording of course. The tube looks classy and well-made enough but I do not like the fact that the holographic wording on the plastic tends to rubbed off after some time. Such a pity. It is understandable as the wording are just a paint on, not embossed + paint on. Perhaps ColourPop should consider making the branding on the tube sticks on better?

I went a lil bit on the safe side with the colour selection for liquid matte lipstick. These, I heard are opaque and quite intense. And I am currently into mauve-y, nude-y pink shade so that is where I was heading to with these matte liquid lipsticks.

I like that the applicator is not too long like Kat Von D liquid lipstick. Those are long! It makes application a challenge. The one ColourPop had in their Ultra Matte Lip and Ultra Satin Lip is a doe-foot applicator. Not too spongey, just right.

It took me quite some time to find the shades I want, with the reasonable price, and ready stock. I am not into pre-order as I do not have the patience to wait for 3-4 weeks for a lipstick 😀 😀

ColourPop matte liquid lipstick are suitable for those with smoother lips. And if you do not have smooth lips, you need to exfoliate before applying them. I am one lazy bum and I do not have any lip scrub around so I slap on a thick lip balm before sleep the night before. I have read that these are a hit and miss formula. I also read that ColourPop reformulated it and it was less drying and reduces the “crack” on the lips. I even got the newest formula aka Lumiere 2, which Kathleen Lights said in her video that the formula has changed and better. Either the old formula, the new formula or the less drying Ultra Satin Lip, on me it still cracks.

How do I make it work? I have tried everything. From applying a thin layer to smiling sillily during application. Then I tried this one method and although it cracks (still) but it is more comfortable and not as hideous on the lip as before. And that method is to scrap every bits of product back to the tube, leaving the doe-foot applicator with almost no product at all. The application is not as tough as I imagined it to be as there are some lipstick left on the inside of the sponge tip. So it wasn’t too bad.

Ultra Matte Lip #Solow was my second UML from ColourPop. It took me so long to find one. It is also the most disappointing of the two I had back then. My first was Scrooge and the consistency is amazing. So when the highly anticipated Solow came through the mail, I applied on and it cracks. It cracks so bad that I almost wanted to throw it away. I have ask so many people and they said it was OK on them. Did I get a bad one? I have no idea. The shade is absolutely beautiful on the other hand. It is a nude-y pink, a shade which I love.

Ultra Matte Lip #Scrooge was my first purchase from the UML family. Initially I wanted the shade Bad Habit as it has that purple tint to it that I wanted. It was sold so I have to settle with Scrooge instead. Scrooge is very similar to Bad Habit, only with a red base to it. For some reason this darker UML is more liquidy and moisturizing. It does not crack on my lips even a bit. It dries down so comfortably on my lips. Feels like nothing on the lips and lasts me all day long without any need to reapply at all.

Ultra Matte Lip #Lumiere 2 is the liquid matte lipstick version of Lippie Stix Lumiere by Kathleen Lights. According to Kathleen, the formulation is better that is why she agreed to do this. But seriously, it is no difference with Solow. Maybe just 10% better? Lumiere 2 is more darker than the Lippie Stix. For some weird reason (again), it turns even more grunge dark on me after one hour of wearing. When I had it on at first, mom was OK with it. 2 hours down the road she was shocked to see the dark grunge lip I had on. I was shocked too. I have to say Lumiere 2 is my least favourite among the four I had.

Ultra Satin Lip #Echo Park shade is my favourite! The shade, not the consistency. ColourPop came out with the “satin” version for those who are looking for a more hydrating liquid lipstick. It kinda reminds me of Maybelline Velvet Matte, except that this ColourPop one dries down matte. The Maybelline one does not. Echo Park is a nude-y brown shade, beautiful but on photos it looks like you had no lipstick on lol. Funny that even this satin version still settles into the lip fine lines on me. I would say it is just a tiny bit more creamier than the matte version but it is still the same thing. I would prefer Ultra Matte Lip to be honest. I bought one Ultra Satin Lip because I want to compare how is it different from the Ultra Matte Lip.

Overall I would say for the price I paid (RM35-RM42), it is not that bad. I could not get a full matte liquid lipstick here that is as affordable as this. If you have more budget, try Dose of Colors, Jeffree Star and even Anastasia Beverly Hills. Gerard Cosmetics have pretty good one too.

ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip and Ultra Satin Lip was bought from a few different online sellers. At the moment ColourPop does not ship to Malaysia directly.

+ Ultra Matte Lip #Scrooge – RM34 (I think) from doodletoodle.
+ Ultra Matte Lip #Solow – Can’t remember who is the seller and how much I bought for.
+ Ultra Matte Lip #Lumiere 2 – RM38 from cosmetics.junkie.
+ Ultra Satin Lip #Echo Park – RM42 from makeupdion.

  • I ordered a bunch of colourpop coz it’s cheaper than other brands. Honestly I’m not a fan. They don’t last as long as jeffree star, stila, lime crime or kat Von d. The only thing I’ll be buying again from colourpop is the lip primer

    • I’m not a fan of the texture. I heard Jeffree Star is way better. Heard ColourPop eyeliner is good too!

    • Scrooge I don’t wear often. So red lol. But I do like Solow, Scrooge and Echo Park. Lumiere 2 is really not my fav. Too dark for my liking.

  • i havent tried UML coz I saw too many reviews saying they’re drying (maybe not all). When I was walking down the instagram feed, I saw someone wearing this pretty shade of liquid lipstick from Ofra Cosmetics, shade Havana Nights (collab with Kathleen Lights) and I really would love to get this one solely because of the colour. Have u tried any from Ofra?

    • The reviews are true. It’s drying 🙁 . I wanted to order Ofra liquid lipstick until I google for review and saw that most people said the packaging is a bit cheapo. Some reseller here are selling for RM80-90? So I rather not order. Havana Nights is not my preferred shade though. Too dark for me 🙁
