Christmas 2014 Q&A Matthew McConaughey 1
Do you find it difficult to keep in shape over Christmas?
Oh, yes absolutely! I let myself off. And I say to myself – you’re going to put on ten. Let’s do it! It needs to be done.

Do you go on diet after Christmas?
Yes. You got something to work for. I try to say, you know what? Don’t sit there and look at it, let it go.

Do you have any special Christmas decorations?
We have old stockings. My mother passed down a lot of our stockings that we had as kids so every year she brings stockings. And now our kids have stockings too. We keep those. We have boxes of old ornaments that my mother passed down that we used to have on our tree. We still have the same star that was on our tree that we put on our tree to this day.

Do you have any Christmas traditions?
The tradition is getting the family together, and all the grandkids and all the kids together. We don’t go anywhere; we stay at home and tell the stories. Some of the same old stories are always told. That has always been the most important tradition – just to have my family together.

Do you have any favourite game on Christmas eve?
Not really. We don’t have a ritual of certain games we play. There’s no ritual to games.

What do you for the New Year’s Eve?
My wife’s tradition, in her country is to wear all white and go to the ocean and get little white flowers and put them in the sea. We’ve done it the last few years.

Is there any specific fragrance that you would buy for your partner for Christmas?
Dolce&Gabbana The One Cardinal Red.

What is the perfect Christmas fragrance?
The fragrance that I always enjoy wearing over the Christmas period is Dolce&Gabbana The One For Men. I think it’s a very unique masculine scent that stands out but isn’t overpowering. This year’s limited edition Deep Brown bottle gives The One For Men a rich and earthy feel.

What are you hoping that Father Christmas will bring you?
Continued health for me and the whole family. There are no other things that I want.

Which things particularly remind you of Christmas?
Going and cutting down the fresh Christmas tree, which we’ve taken the kids to do the last few years, and having a real tree in the house for the whole month. Every time we come in, the smell reminds you that Christmas is coming.

And what do you like about Christmas the most?
What I like about Christmas the most is getting together with family and the night before. Hanging up the stockings, setting out the milk and cookies. Talking about how to fit, wonder how the heck Santa can get down that chimney. Pretend he can do it and then answering questions such as how does he do everybody’s house? It’s magic. He’s a magic guy. He covers the world all over. Last year, I told my kids when he moves from the east to the west, it’s later over there so he’s moving that way so he can do very many things. So it’s about that time, about the meridians. Explaining that was fun. I like staying up really late and then, coming out the next morning and then the kids are like, how did he do that?

What is your favourite Christmas food?
My mom’s boyfriend makes a great lasagne, and then we usually have a big ham and a turkey. What’s actually kind of my favourite is not the sit-down Christmas lunch, but the late-night leftover ham sandwich.
