Review: Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask to Purify, Detox and Exfoliate at the Same Time

If you have been following the blog for some time, you are well aware that I am not really a fan of sheet mask as I still think wash off mask is more convenient for me. The funny thing is most people told me the opposite :). I think the main reason on why I would prefer wash off mask is because I usually apply mask at night while I blog. Sheet mask will slide down my face slowly and I’m very afraid that this will drag all my skin down on prolong usage. But that’s just a personal preference. Everyone is different in a way 😀

When I was asked on which tube of Freeman mask that I would like to bring home to use, I don’t even have to think twice and pointed at Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask.

Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Face Polishing Mask 1
Although Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask looks like some kind of mask that are suitable for combination to oily skin, this mask is actually meant for all skin type. This is a unique mask AND scrub that works double the time to purify, detox and exfoliate the skin.

The tube is huge for 150ml of content! I’m sure you won’t miss this at the local drugstore. The tube itself is kinda soft. At the moment I don’t have any issue with squeezing and dispensing the content out as the content in it is still full but since this mask contain actual black sugar, the sugar bits is stuck at the dispense hole so the cap won’t closed properly. Each time after using this mask I would need to wipe off the leftover from the dispensing hole in order to close the cap properly.

There is no prize in guessing what the Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask looks like. It’s really a no brainer even for someone who is new to the mask because the mask is exactly as what was written on the tube. It is black in color (duhh!), contain actual black sugar bits which means you can feel the sugar itself.

You would think the mask will be dry and harsh since there’s sugar bits in it right? Well not really. I’m quite pleased to see that the mask is moist when I squeeze the content out. Once I spread the mask evenly, somehow the black sugar emulsified and turns watery a bit as if the sugar melted off. It’s actually the Lavender Oil ingredient in it. The scent is amazing. I’m not able to put in words on what my nose was picking but it does smells gooooddddd, and sweet too. I definitely can smell the sweet sugary scent from the black sugar.

My mum will laugh her head off everytime I had this mask on. She said I looked hideous. I don’t think I am but after looking at the “During” picture which I took earlier, my God my mum was so right! LOL!

I can feel the heat from Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Facial Polishing Mask even when it’s in contact with my finger before application. The heat is even more obvious as I was spreading the mask onto my face. Let me warn you that applying this mask onto the face takes a lot of time and patience. It’s not the easiest mask to be spread in the world. Everything will just clump and fell off from the face to the ground. The trick is not less is more but more is better. What I do is I will squeeze more product onto a few fingers and spread. Repeat until the whole face except for the eyes are covered. You will definitely feel the heat and slight burning sensation on the face. It doesn’t turn from bad to worse so it’s pretty acceptable. Just a slight discomfort. Leave the mask on for 5 to 7 minutes before gently massaging all over the face for 1 to 2 minutes as exfoliator and rinse with warm water. I can already feel that my face is 200% more smoother and softer as I was rinsing my face.

The Activated Charcoal ingredient in the mask helps to absorb oil and impurities without over-drying the skin surface while Black Sugar helps in exfoliating all the dull skin cells so the skin will be softer and more clarity.

I have a confession. My face in the “After” picture was suppose to be brighter but I was not satisfied with the angle and stuff so by the time I have gotten my shot, my face return slightly back to normal LOL. But anyhow you can still see the brightness 😀

I haven’t been using the mask diligently to tell you this works like a miracle. To be honest this mask is just a purifying and exfoliating mask to me so I wasn’t expecting anything drastic. But one thing for sure is that I certainly have lesser skin congestion problem and my skin is oh-so-smooth after using. Remember not to over use this mask. It is only recommended to use two times a week or maybe three times? I know it can be addictive to scrub, scrub and scrub 🙂

Was this a good buy?

I say oh yeah! For RM18.90 per tube it definitely is. I’ve spent more than that before and ended up with a crappy product.

Happy mask-ing girls!

  • I think some sheet masks are made better than others but I agree, I struggle to keep some of them on my face sometimes. They do slide right off, as you say.
In terms of economy, however, I do believe cream/ gel masks from the tube are more affordable. I use both alternatively for the face but I stick to sheet (sock-type) masks for the feet as I think foot creams would be hard to use as I can’t find the time to keep still enough for that long. At least with the sock mask I can still shuffle around and I think it’s important because foot masking takes so much longer (at least 1 hour) for any decent results.

    • Some sheet mask are better quality and stays put on the face like TT Mask. The best I’ve tried so far 😀
Foot mask? Wow. I’m not as hardworking on the foot at all comparing to face. I use L’Occitane foot cream but it gets everywhere on the bed. However it’s still easier to use. Just wear a special socks on it 😀

  • Ooh, this sounds like Skinfood’s Black Sugar mask. It also has sugar particles that melts as you massage. This is do much cheaper though!

I used to prefer sheet masks but now I prefer wash off or sleeping mask. I feel like they work better or more specific target area.

Speaking of masks, yesterday I wanted to use up the Sampar dream cream since I’m flying to Singapore today (at the airport now). So I used twice as much as I’d normally use at night. Wow. My skin is baby smooth right now. It really works like a dream (OMG how corny)!

    • Skinfood Black Sugar Mask color is more like brown sugar lol but yes I think the concept is the same. I like the melting part. Scrubbing is not painful as well. Sleeping mask don’t work much for me. Unless I use Clinique Moisture Surge as sleeping mask then I will woke up with soft, bouncy skin :D.

Yay on Sampar Dream Cream! It’s one of the highly raved product dear. I heard Sampar in Singapore is closed down too. Not sure about that.

        • Oh nooo…Sampar in Malaysia was closed some time ago and the owner own Singapore one as well. Which means it’s also closed I suppose.

  • This one sounds interesting – charcoal and sugar 🙂 Tasty yet…odd. I prefer those rinse off mask for some funny reason though I will readily admit that I am a lazy bum when it comes to facial mask. I guess to some extent, it is because some sheet mask that I have used in the past were too moist that the liquid starts to drip down my neck. So that was quite a messy affair. I am currently using the REN Glycolactic Radiance Renewal Mask. Will try other types of mask when I am done with this one.

    • Just the other day I accidentally eaten a bit of sugar. Taste like sugar :P. I had that dripping issue as well with certain sheet mask particularly My Beauty Diary mask. So irritating! REN one are good. If you found a good one there’s no necessary to change :). Me on the other hand couldn’t stay loyal for too long but I always go back to my favourite i.e. Clarins Pure & Radiant Mask.

      • Haha! You are too funny and cute! I use the Sarah Happ Creme Brulee lip scrub and sometimes purposely lick a little off my lips 🙂 I also like to explore new brands. Usually will refer to your reviews before I hop on board.

        • Oh yea by the way. Is the Sarah Happ Creme Brulee lip scrub good? I went to Sephora today and saw Fresh Christmas set. There’s a small duo set which I think I can splurge on. It’s either Sarah Happ one or Fresh 😀

          • My humble 2 cents…While the Sarah Happ products sounded like delicious desserts with assorted flavours – creme brulee, vanilla, red velvet etc. and there was a lot of hype over it in the blogosphere, I did not like the after taste. There is a layer of oily film and it leaves a cloying chemical after taste. I reckon it is because they use Petrolatum (petroleum jelly). I don’t use it that much because of the after taste. Application and scrubbing are no problem. These days, I apply Himalaya Lip Balm before bedtime. It also leaves a layer of oil on my lips but due to the natural ingredients, there is less chemical after taste. Next morning, I will either use my fingers or toothbrush to scrub away the dead skin on my lips. So far so good. My sister brought home a bunch of Himalaya products during her last student exchange trip to India. Cheap, natural and good too 🙂 While I was reading up on Sarah Happ, some bloggers compared it with Fresh. I know Fresh has its cult followers too. Maybe it is worth a try or you can look for the comparison posts before you decide 😉

          • Thanks for the heads up. I think I’ll just pick up Fresh haha :D. The mini Christmas Set would be just nice 😉

  • I am interested in this product but after looking around, it is only available in west Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak guardian and Watson did not carry this product. I get it through my kl friend and having 15% discount. Yet to try out ^^

    • 🙂 Hi Grace. I have finished it and currently using Skin Food Black Sugar Scrub. Freeman products in general are pretty good. I have not tried the oatmeal avocado clay mask unfortunately as I’m going through my current stash before I’m able to purchase others to try 😀 . Sorry dear.
