ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame (Clear/Dark): Absolute must-have brow mascara to tame the unruly brow hair and to keep them in place all day long

I know I am slightly obsessed with anything to do with brow but I swear this ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame ‘came’ to me out of no where. The story is, I haven’t been browsing iHerb for a good few months so I thought of visiting the site to see what’s new. You know, window shopping for fun? But because I have been searching for ‘brow mascara’ through the internet and on iHerb before, this new product – ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame popped right at the recommended product section. I click on the link and the rest is history although the whole process took a few weeks because the product was out of stock. Initially I wanted to get the darkest shade of all (Clear/Deep) but the shade on the tube freaks me out so I decided on the second darkest of the lot, which is the one I’m reviewing today 😀 .

ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame
ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame comes in five shades namely Clear/Light, Clear/Ash, Clear/Medium, Clear/Dark and Clear/Deep. Each of these cost only USD$3 (RM9.81) which is absolutely a steal considering you get two different product with two different function. There is nothing to shout about on the packaging because ELF has always been keeping everything simple from as long as I know them. When it comes to ELF, I’m not bothered by it’s packaging as I am too a minimalist 😀 . Eventhough the packaging is kept simple, I like that I can find all the information that I need to know about the product from the outer box.

ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame Packaging
ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame is a dual-end, dual-function product meant for the eyebrow. I didn’t buy this product for this gel treatment actually. I was eyeing on the mascara end. So this is a bonus. You will find that each end are properly indicated by the simple labelling on the middle of the tube. See the word ‘Treat’ and ‘Tame’? Yeap that’s the one. I have seen a review online saying that her labelling is wrong. It was funny hehe. Mine was properly labeled, just in case you’re wondering 😀

Now, if you don’t like to read instruction like I do, you will be lost with this product. There are similar product as this but with a reverse application sequence. ELF suggested to use the ‘Treat’ gel to condition, repair and restore the eyebrows. I’m so bad with remembering which is Treat and which is Tame therefore I remember by the color. So transparent gel is the first to apply onto the eyebrow first. This gel is scentless and it’s not sticky at all. I must admit I was taken by surprise with the texture. I was expecting something gluey, something yucky smelling and something I’d hate. But nah. The applicator comes in a brush form, which I was so glad it is a brush not doe-foot applicator. However here comes the downside. The brush caught up with foundation and powder that I applied prior so the brush is stained a bit. I usually run the brush over a piece of tissue paper vigorously to get rid of the residue before putting the brush back into the tube. I’m a hygiene freak 🙂

The very main reason why I bought this is because (1) I had a hard time finding a good clear mascara, (2) it’s cheap! and (3) the shade selection is handful. Most of the time Japanese brand came out with brow mascara that are in blonde or ashy shade. I’ve no idea why would anyone brought these shade in. Afterall majority of us are not born blonde or would bleach the hair blonde. I’ve tried a few clear mascara and honestly most clear mascara are mainly just a gel instead of a mascara and I hated the glossy finishing. Plus it doesn’t hold all the brow hair together.

From the outside of the tube, the shade Dark is looking all bronzy. But the color of the product is darker in real. The wand is short, the mascara brush is slightly curved and it’s not too big. The brow mascara does have a scent to it but only if you take it close to your nose and sniff. Most of the time I couldn’t even smell it during application.

This is what I call brow mascara. Instead of giving the brow hair a hint of color, this one here comes with fine tiny fibers to add definition and to gel the original brow hair together. And I don’t see any fiber fallout throughout the whole day. How wonderful is this?

Here is the swatch of ELF Eyebrow Treat gel and Tame mascara on the back of my hand. The brow mascara looks like it’s going to be too fair for my dark hair judging from the tube but turns out the color is actually darker than it seems.

I stop trimming my eyebrow so that I can grow the hair out a little bit for volume. It actually works because my brow is looking fuller now. The problem with not trimming the brow hair is that I need something to keep them in place. There are two different method on using the ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame. Most of the time I would prefer to use it together with an eye brow pencil. That’s the whole purpose of my buying a brow mascara.

With eye brow pencil

This Before and After diagram below shows how much my brow changed after using ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame. However there is one thing to note. The ‘Treat’ gel takes some time to dry down complete. Most of the time I let it semi-dry and start to draw my eyebrow. The gel however prevent the harshness of eyebrow pencil if I accidentally draw on too hard or too much. It somehow turns everything even more natural looking. I love how the ‘Tame’ mascara makes my brow fuller, keeps my brow hair together and it gives the brow just a hint of tint, without changing my original brow hair color too much. I’ve read that your brow hair color should be one or two shade lighter than your hair and this shade is perfect for the purpose if you have darker hair like mine.

On it’s own

On a lazy day if I’m not going anywhere important or anywhere far, I would use this product on it’s on. Comparing to using on top of an eye brow pencil, it appears more bronzy and more chocolatey. However it’s not too drastic so I can live with that. I like how I can fill in the gaps using the brow mascara, which obviously Eyeko Brow Gel failed to do and it’s much more expensive too. Can you tell already I love love love this ELF Eyebrow Treat & Tame?

Once it sets, it stays on all day long and won’t comes off if you try to rub them but, it comes off easily with rubbing under running water. Anyhow that’s not the proper way to remove it ya. I would suggest removing it with a proper makeup remover.

Here is the comparison using two different method as mentioned above 🙂

ELF is a USA cosmetic brand but manufactured in China. Eventhough so, the brand is cruelty free, which kinda shock me because product as affordable as this managed to stay cruelty free. Last but not least, here are the ingredients list for those who are interested.

I am officially a huge fan of this Eyebrow Treat & Tame. I always wonder why is it constantly out of stock in iherb. No wonder it’s always out of stock. It is really good if you like to use brow mascara to keep unruly brow hair in place. The shade selection available is also a plus point because I can never find other brand that offer darker color for darker hair. It’s out of stock now as I’m typing this. I will make sure to stock up the next time I haul from iHerb again.
