Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box & Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit: Useful for small nitty-gritty, doesn’t store a lot of bigger stuff

When Muji came around, everyone went crazy over their acrylic especially the drawer box. Beauty enthusiasts all over the world raved about it and I’m sure you can find millions of review, blog, video and organization tips photos of it on the net. Me on the other hand was feeling meh over their acrylic box. I’m not liking the fact that it is clear and you can see everything from the outside. Plus I’m not keen with all the finger prints or makeup residue prints on these clear box.

As you know, I’m kinda into glassware at the moment (yes still) so naturally I’m attracted to clear makeup organizer. One day, one of my long time reader Tiffany Tai PM-ed me on Facebook saying ‘found something, I think you will like it’ together with Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box and Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit photo, I thought she was just telling me that Muji has makeup organizer. But when she told me there is a 30% sale for both of it, I wanted to dash to Muji right away.

Muji Acrylic Drawer Box
I couldn’t remember how big or wide the Muji Acrylic Drawer Box is so I didn’t set any target to purchase it immediately. When I saw the size, I was relieved that it is quite huge but the drawer height is not as deep as I think it would be. Just 2.5cm. I took my time browsing, comparing and gave it a deep thought if I could ever fit my eyeshadow palettes in it. That’s what I needed it for.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box retails for RM86.90, which rounds up to RM60.80 after 30% discount and the Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit retails for RM52.90, which rounds up to RM37 after 30% discount. I did however did a quick calculation at home to figure out if I should get the 5-tier or two of the 3-tier unit. It turns out that each tier is around RM12-ish for both type so I decided to buy the Acrylic 5 Drawer Box.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box
Since many people commented that “I always go Sephora” whenever I share great deals I spotted at the store on Instagram, I have decided not to share so much great deals anymore. So you will see lesser from me from now on. But you know me. I just couldn’t keep anything good to myself especially this 30% OFF deal. Thus the reason why you’re reading this now.

Back to the Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box. There’s a few things I don’t like about it. First is the hole where you slid in a finger to pull the drawer out. I would prefer a proper dainty handle because dust somehow will sneak into the drawer unit through the hole. And I know I will get foundation prints all over the side. So, that’s what it is. What I DO LIKE about the Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box unit is that the quality is absolutely top notch. All the drawer slides out as smooth as butter. The outer wall is made from thicker acrylic while the drawer…not really.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box Hole
I posted up on Instagram a few days ago on the sale and a quick review on what I think about it. I don’t know why accepting the fact that these Muji drawer unit are not for everyone seems to be hard on Muji fans. Bear in mind, I bought this unit to store my eyeshadow palettes so what I said or going to say will evolve around the purpose of my purchase. Not lipstick, not pencils, not brushes, not stationeries, not eyeshadow singles.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box Space
For eyeshadow palettes, this will not be the best choice if you have lots of it and if they are all in odd sizes like mine. I was frustrated that I couldn’t fit all my eyeshadow palettes neatly without any gap. So I started to fit random products into the gap. The initial idea to fit nothing but eyeshadow palettes is now down the drain lol. It is also impossible to stack two thin palette because you will risk scratching the bottom of the upper drawer. Been there, done that.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box Random Palettes
I totally get it when some people disagree with me that this doesn’t fit a lot of products. I do get it. I really do. As I said earlier, I bought it for a sole purpose and that is for eyeshadow palettes. I already knew that every other nitty-gritty things will fit a lot and neatly into the Muji acrylic drawer unit. I do know that. To prove that I really do know, I purposely fit some of my lip product in one of the drawer for picture sake. Yes these fits SO MUCH MORE and perfectly. I do get it seriously and I totally respect storage purpose of each individual. Just not my eyeshadow palettes. It’s just me.

Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box Perfect for Lip Products
I don’t know what has gotten into me. It must be that I didn’t shop much recently and my hands are itching to shop so my mind went back to the Muji acrylic sale. This time I had my eyes on the Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit because it’s only RM37 after discount and that I’m building my lipstick collection so I foresee I will need the 3-tier unit. I went back a few days ago and bought it.

Muji Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit
At the moment I have nothing to store yet so I moved both Urban Decay Vice 2 and Vice 3 from the Acrylic 5 Drawer Box to the lowest drawer. I’m still figuring out the best way to organize both drawer box units and I’ve yet to line each drawer so that they are scratch free 🙂 Until then, this is what my current Muji Acrylic 5 Drawer Box and Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit has.

Muji Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit Big Palettes
Muji is currently having a 30% OFF markdown for Acrylic 5 Drawer Box & Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit only. I have check with the sales person at Muji Mid Valley and they said the markdown is until they run out of stock. According to them, the markdown is to make way for new designs. Also take note that not all Muji store are aware of the sale. Odd, I know. Tiffany bought her Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit from Sunway Pyramid store and I bought mine from Mid Valley store. Her friend later on went to the same Sunway Pyramid store to get the Acrylic 5 Drawer Box and she was told that the discount only valid for Acrylic 3 Drawer Unit. ShopGirl went to Pavilion store and they told her there are no discount on acrylic products. She then went to Avenue K store and the sales person made a call to Mid Valley branch to confirm on the sale. It makes me wonder what happened to the communication between the head office to the stores. Why are all the stores not communicated properly with regards to the in-store promotion that is suppose to run simultaneously. Although I had a good experience with Mid Valley store, nonetheless I was shocked that this happened to Muji. ShopGirl and I both was saying that this is like Sephora all over again. Some store say this, some store say that, some say cannot use 10% discount, some say can.

I left the unit unattended for a day and when I took it out from the paper bag 2 days later, I saw a huge discolouration patch on the top of the box and that patch is staring at me from the corner where I was sitting. I called up Muji enquiring about exchanging as the receipt stated no exchange is permitted for sale item. I was allowed for an exchange and the process was done without any issue. Ai yai yai…

So if you’ve always wanted a Muji acrylic unit but think it’s too expensive like I do, this is the right time to get one. The markdown doesn’t have a due date but it’s while stock lasts. I went to Muji a few days ago and all the Acrylic 5 Drawer Box is more or less sold out.

Muji stores is located at Pavilion, Mid Valley, Avenue K and Sunway Pyramid.

Price:
+ Acrylic 5 Drawer Box – RM86.90, RM60.80 after 30% OFF.

  • Thanks for the share babe 🙂 but I think I will give this a pass….I’m pretty sure my stuff would not fit in there :p However, I did head over to Mr. DIY and got two of the organisers you shared 🙂 That one fits me perfectly. Thanks a lot! and I always love hearing about your bargain buys. It enables me to get better stuff at a cheaper price! 😀

    • Hehe I’m sure it won’t fit your growing stash. I know you love Sephora as much as I do hehehehehee. Mr. DIY organizer is smaller than Muji dear. Can fit? But it’s cheap to just get a few though 🙂
I’m glad to hear you love my bargain buy sharing. Good things must be share 😉

      • Haha I needed the Mr. DIY ones for my brushes and smaller items and hair accessories, so not too bad. That, and I’m also moving house in a few months, so if I start to organise now, it will be quite a hassle to pack everything up and really move it when moving day comes :p and yes, I love Sephora!!! haha even if I have nothing to buy, I just want to stroll around just looking at pretty stuff and mark them down on my wishlist and wait for markdowns and sales :p

        • Oh I see. The Mr DIY one would make a great organizer for that. I wasn’t able to hunt for more. Almost all Mr DIY outlet out of stock. Need to go further deep 😀
My Sephora spending credit card bill came a few days ago. Nearly fainted looking at the amount I spent. No more Sephora for me this month haha (hopefully) 🙂

  • Lol, after reading your article, I’m thinking I need the 5-tier too but initially I had wondered if it was going to be too tall for my needs. Mine will be a home for my brushes so size wise, it’s perfect!
Anyway, *high fives* I’m glad that between us we were finally sort out the deal that was going on at Muji even if the Muji people themselves seemed to have no clue. Yes, it was Sephora all over again!
I’m truly grateful to you for letting me know about the offer because I’ve been looking at these acrylics for a year now and couldn’t justify the expense but at RM37 for a 3-tier – it was a deal too good to pass up. I only wish they would discount the whole hog so I could go all out and acrylic-my-life but hey, I’m happy to pace myself out.

Thank you again for sharing these deals, Fiona – your readers have got it lucky. It really takes time and effort to share a deal and I hope that everyone appreciates the work that goes in to these kind of blog/ instagram posts. Three cheers!!

    • 5-tier is not very tall so it’s perfect 🙂 . I heard more Muji drama from reader Tiffany. She went back to Sunway Pyramid branch to get the 5-tier but was rejected. The cashier machine scanned the item with discount but there was no sticker on the item itself so the staff told her no discount applicable *facepalm*. On another note, her friend managed to buy from Pavilion store. How unsystematic is that? But I’m glad you made Avenue K to call Mid Valley. It’s annoying that each store are not synchronise properly.
Totally understand you on not being able to justify the expense. I didn’t want to buy any last time as it’s too expensive for me. Now that it’s RM37, it’s soooo much worth it. I’m eyeing on a few other acrylic stuff to but like you said, I wish they put up discount on the whole hog. I kinda like acrylic now.
Hehe I said I wouldn’t want to share too much on IG but I can’t help but to whatsapp you on this 🙂 .

      • Oh no, not more Muji drama! That’s insane that they can’t figure it out in one nice and consistent way before starting the promotion so that customers aren’t running around like crazy. I mean, the amount of transport time/ money we have to pay to get to the store in the first place makes me want to scream.

Anyway, I love it when you post stuff on Instagram!

        • I’ve done retail operations for Samsung Mobile before whereas I communicated what the HQ wanted to all the stores and make sure all of them run / understand the promo. For Muji I guess this person is non-existance or is not doing his/her job. That is so weird.

Thanks! Actually I wanted to take a quick stroll at Sephora Sunway Pyramid after my meeting but I had high fever not knowing it’s high fever and I went home immediately after the meeting. So wanted to know other markdown 🙁

  • Hello Fiona ^_^ wow, the sale prices have gone from expensive to relevant and affordable. I’ve always wanted these drawers from Muji, but i was held back by their normal price. I also wanted it just to store my palettes or anything that looks like a palette. It’s just like I’m worried some might be too bulky or I will end up with some small space that nothing can fit and it will look ugly -_-” I’ll be going to KL again in a few days, might as well check at Mid Valley if there is anything left, hehe. Thanks for telling about the discount!

    • Hehe yes Mieza, especially the 3-tier one. I had the same problem with storing palettes now with the Muji. It’s beginning to look like a waste of space as I can’t fit everything nicely in there. Do check out Mid Valley branch. So far they are the only store that properly label the sale item. There’s a lot 3-tier left 😀 5-tier I think I saw one or two left. If you can get the 5-tier one. Tak payah pening nak beli lagi lain kali 😛

  • Hi fiona,
I think it’s such a shame that you stopped the sephora bargains on your instagram. I really enjoyed those even if I had to restrained myself from running out to buy some items. The boxes look good, but I still find them pricey with 30% off. I hope that you’ll reconsider your sephora deals post as they were fantastic!

    • Hi Verona,
Not just Sephora but everything haha. Lately there is no bargains at Sephora but I heard they’re doing markdown again. I’ll post when I spot something good 🙂
I was contemplating with buying the 5-tier because RM60.80 to me is still expensive. I calculated and each drawer for both 5-tier and 3-tier is around RM12-ish so I decided to get the 5-tier instead. I told myself one is enough. Obviously I did not stop lol.
The reason why I bought Muji instead of other random acrylic box that is ranging from RM90-RM120 for one is also due to the size. Those brandless are kinda plasticky although they claim it’s acrylic. By comparison, Muji is bigger 🙂

  • Whoa, that’s really expensive for branders acrylic boxes. I was buying fabric sorters from homes harmony the other day. They were from rm10-60 depending on size. My friend was joking the other by saying we spend so much money on makeup and then spend even more to keep them. Lol. Anyway, speaking of sephora I got a really good deal on some caviar hair shampoo the other day. The price on one bottle is usually a ridiculous 147.for some reason they were selling both the shampoo and conditioner in a set for 128. Weird right? Too good a deal to resist =p

    • I know right? It’s insane. I’m still very much into my rotating organizer. Literally store all of my used makeup 🙂 . I managed to find the same brandless acrylic box from Mr. DIY for RM17++.
Your friend is soooo right. The storage system is way more expensive than the makeup haha.
Sephora irks me a lot. They are constantly changing price and promo until I lost track which is which. Thank goodness they did not lower the price for stuff that I’ve bought or else I’ll flip! lol. There’s a lot of buy 1 free 1 lately. Be prepared to spend 🙂

  • Hi find, guess what? I ended up picking up the 5 drawer at muji. Lol. The drawers weren’t as shallow as I thought they were surprisingly. Thanks for the info!

    • HAHAHA no bad! I managed to convert someone that is not a fan into a purchaser *do the happy dance*. It’s not going to be as shallow as you thought depending on what you want to store dear. The shallow part is only for me and my palettes.
